Where AI Answers Get Their Sources

YouTube video appearing as a cited source inside an AI-generated search answer

Where do AI answers get their sources? From pages that already state a clear fact and are easy to point at: a focused guide, a publisher list, a Reddit thread, a YouTube transcript, a docs page, or a vendor comparison. The brand names in the answer are often just the names those pages already repeat.

If you only watch whether you were mentioned, you miss the asset. The cited URL is the thing to open.

What kept showing up in our saved checks

These are observed citations in Bloomiro's saved Google AI Overview checks, not a universal law. Latest checks in that set run through 22 September 2026. Across "how do I track this" and "what tool should I use" prompts, the same shapes returned:

Source we saw repeatedlyWhat kind of page it isWhat to learn
keyword.com guide to Perplexity mentionsA single how-to with a direct titleA narrow guide can beat a homepage. Our version is how to track Perplexity brand mentions
frase.io, zapier.com, brainz.digital, position.digital, wpengine.com"Best tools" listiclesHead terms are publisher contests. Do not clone them
business.adobe.comA large brand's how-toAuthority plus a clean explainer
sparktoro.comAn opinionated essay on how to get mentionedThe angle is the argument, not a tool dump
reddit.comA thread of practitionersCommunity wording leaks into answers. See community sources
seranking.com product pageA vendor page for the jobVendors get cited when the page answers the prompt

YouTube belongs in the same family even when a given check does not list it. Transcripts are text. Why YouTube gets cited.

How to read a source list

  1. Group by type: your domain, competitor domain, publisher, community, video, docs.
  2. If one publisher appears on many prompts, read it once and note the brands in its table. Those brands will look "popular" in your dashboard because the article is popular.
  3. If the citations are all off your site, another 800 words on your blog is a weak bet. You need a page worth quoting, or a mention on a domain already in the list.
  4. If the citation is your comparison page, protect that URL. Do not launch a second comparison for the same pair. We already have Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Surfer, Peec, Profound, Otterly, and Scrunch.

The study version, with a count attached, is AI Overview citations versus organic rankings. Organic rank and citation are related and they are not the same event.

What a small team should publish instead

Publish the page the listicle will not bother to write well:

Then point internal links from the hub, track brand mentions in AI search, at those URLs. Internal links do not create authority you do not have. They do tell Google and a careful reader which URL is the one you mean.

Frequently asked questions

Which sites do AI answers cite most?

It depends on the prompt. On our saved tool-tracking checks, specialist guides and publisher listicles showed up more often than homepages. Your category may cite docs, Reddit, or YouTube instead. Read your own runs.

Should I try to get on the listicle that keeps getting cited?

Only if the list is real and you can stand behind the description they will write. A paid placement on a thin list is a weak source. A genuine inclusion on a page Google already cites is worth more than a new post on your blog.

Do citations follow Google rankings?

Sometimes the same URL does both. Often they diverge. Measure them separately, then decide which gap is yours to close.

How do I track the source list over time?

Save cited domains per prompt, per engine, per date. In Bloomiro that is part of the AI presence result. Sort for domains that repeat. A domain that appears once is a maybe. A domain that appears on every run is the pattern.
